The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) conducted seven raids on Monday in its investigation into Tubagus Chaeri “Wawan” Wardana, the younger brother of Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah.
One of the locations targeted by the KPK was the official residence of Wawan’s wife Airin Rachmy Diani, the major of South Tangerang, Banten.
KPK spokesman Johan Budi confirmed that the raids took place in Jakarta and Banten.
Wawan and Atut were arrested for allegedly bribing former Constitutional Court (MK) chief justice Akil Mochtar, in return for a favorable ruling in a local election dispute for Lebak regency.
The KPK has also named the siblings suspects in two separate graft cases surrounding the procurement of medical equipment for the South Tangerang and Banten administrations. Later, the KPK charged Wawan with money laundering.
In South Jakarta, the KPK searched two of Wawan’s houses on Jl. Denpasar No. II and IV, in Central Jakarta while other investigators ransacked the official residence of Airin, Jl. Sutera Narada V No. 16 in South Tangerang, Banten.
The raid on Airin’s official residence could indicate that Airin may have played a role in the health facilities procurement project in South Tangerang. Airin had previously been questioned as a witness in graft cases involving Tubagus.
In a wealth report she submitted to the KPK on Aug. 24, 2010, Airin was in possession of property worth Rp 103 billion (US$8.4 million); and luxury cars such as a Range Rover Sport, a Mercedes-Benz, a Mini Cooper, a Lamborghini, a Toyota Alphard, a Ferrari and a Porsche Panamera worth Rp 22.1 billion. Her wealth did not match with her profile as a public official.
A source at the KPK said that it had traced assets belonging to Wawan totaling more than Rp 50 billion in the form of land and buildings allegedly tied to money laundering.
The alleged illicit assets are located in Bali, West Java, Banten and Jakarta.
“The team is still working to trace more assets and the total will likely surprise us,” the source said.
Apart from Airin’s official residence, KPK investigators also raided two houses belonging to Yayah Rodiah, a treasurer at one of Wawan’s companies, in Grand Serang Asri and Griya Serang Asri in Serang, Banten, as well as a house belonging to Dadang Prijatna, the commissioner of PT Mikkindo Adiguna Pratama, also in Serang.
The company, allegedly controlled by Wawan, was thought to have won many procurement projects from the Banten provincial administration.
The last location that the KPK raided was a house owned by Wawan’s confidant Dadang Sumpena in Serang.
Together with Wawan, Dadang Prijatna was also named a suspect in the medical facilities procurement graft case.
Antara news agency reported on Monday that KPK investigators confiscated a number of documents from Arin’s official residence. KPK investigators declined to provide details about their raid on Airin’s official residence on Monday.
They were seen leaving the premises in vehicles full of documents.
On Monday, the KPK also questioned Wawan regarding the medical equipment graft cases.
