The South Sumatra police plans to deploy intelligence units and more patrolling officers to monitor state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina’s pipeline from Tempino to Plaju. The efforts are being
taken to prevent oil theft.
“We’re also planning to establish more monitoring posts especially in areas prone to theft,” South Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said on Tuesday as quoted by antaranews.com.
He said to date the police were currently handling 153 oil theft cases, which had targeted the 260-kilometer-pipeline that delivers crude oil from wells in Jambi to Pertamina’s refinery in Plaju, South
Sumatra.
He acknowledged that the field officers faced challenges in their effort to monitor the pipeline
thoroughly due to the fact that in some areas the pipeline was 1.5 to 2 meters below the surface.
PT Pertamina had to close down the Tempino-Plaju pipeline in mid July due to rampant theft. (hrl/dic)
